Post-Ayahuasca diet

Post-diet Ayahuasca and master plants: what to do after a retreat?

Post-diet Ayahuasca and master plants: what to do after a retreat?

Leaving an Amazonian traditional medicine retreat does not necessarily mean that the process experienced during the retreat stops there.

After several days or weeks dedicated to a master plant diet, ceremonies, and a deliberately simplified pace of life, returning to daily life can represent a significant change. Sometimes within just a few hours, the silence of the jungle gives way to transportation, telephones, work, social relationships, and a much more varied diet.

In some traditions of Amazonian curanderismo, a period of post-diet is requested after the closure of a master plant diet.

It does not simply consist of respecting a list of forbidden foods for a few days.

It constitutes a transition period between the specific context of retirement and the return to everyday life.

And it must not be confused with integration.

What is the post-diet?

As part of a traditional master plant diet, departure from the center takes place after what is known as the closing of the diet.

This closure marks a milestone. It means, however, that not all restrictions are ending immediately.

A post-diet period will follow.

Its duration and rules are not universal: they can vary depending on the tradition, the curandera or ayahuasquera guiding the diet, the plant being worked with, the length of the protocol, and the individual's specific situation.

That is why the instructions given by the curandera must always take precedence over general recommendations found on the Internet.

At Inti Eco Lodge, for example, the main post-diet period is 15 days after the closing of the diet, with certain precautions regarding medicinal plants and other medicines maintained during one month.

However, understanding the post-diet phase requires going further than a calendar.

Why is there a post-diet after a retreat?

In Amazonian curanderismo, a master plant diet does not rely solely on taking a plant. It is part of a set of rules intended to preserve the conditions underซึ่ง the work with this plant was undertaken.

The post-diet exists to do not abruptly break this balance right at the end of retirement.

According to tradition, certain habits, substances, foods, sexual relations, or new medicines interfere with the work of the plant when they are reintroduced too quickly. The restrictions maintained after the retreat are therefore aimed at preserve what was opened and worked on during the dieta, while allowing this process to stabilize before introducing new influences.

This is also the reason why it is generally avoided to immediately follow up with another diet or new ceremonies. It is not about accumulating experiences, but rather to give the plant and the process the time to go through their entire cycle.

The post-diet thus relies on an essential notion of curanderismo: respect the plant's time, rather than considering that everything ends with the final ceremony or departure from the center.

Just like preparation before an ayahuasca retreat, the period following retirement is part of the framework surrounding the experience: Preparing for an ayahuasca retreat: diet, treatments and precautions

Post-diet and integration: what is the difference?

The two terms are often used together even though they do not refer to the exact same thing.

Post-diet is a framework. Integration is a process.

The post-diet generally includes concrete recommendations to be followed for a set period: diet, substances, sexuality, other plants or medicines, certain body or energetic practices.

Integration concerns the place that the experience will progressively find in the person's life.

It can involve an insight that occurred during a ceremony, but also in a more subtle way: a different reaction to a usual situation, a relationship perceived differently, a habit that has become less obvious, or a priority that is evolving.

And unlike the post-diet, Integration does not necessarily have a precise end date.

Certain reflections and realizations become clear during the retreat. Others appear several weeks or even several months later.

This is also why immediately looking for an explanation for every dream, emotion, or sensation can be counterproductive.

Not everything needs to be interpreted.

What to eat during the post-diet period?

Returning to your usual diet is best done gradually.

After several days of very plain eating, switching immediately to very fatty, very sugary, heavily spiced, or processed food creates a sudden disruption.

Post-diet dietary restrictions can vary depending on the master plant that was dieted and the recommendations given by the curandera.

At Inti Eco Lodge, during the 15 days post-diet, participants notably continue to avoid alcohol, drugs and psychoactive substances, pork, red meat, chili peppers and heavily spiced foods, coffee, tea, chocolate, refined sugar and sugary products including honey, as well as sodas, cakes, pastries, and herbal infusions. Iced foods and drinks are also avoided.

However, the goal is not to continue eating exactly as during the diet.

Dietary variety can gradually be restored.

Therefore, the relevant question is not only:

«When can I start eating normally again?»

It can also become:

«What do I truly want to nourish my body with when I start choosing again?»

This nuance changes the posture. The restriction gradually ceases to be experienced as waiting before the return to «before» and becomes a time of observation.

Sexuality and post-diet

Sexual abstinence is also part of the rules encountered in various traditional dieta practices.

The closing of the diet does not mark the immediate resumption of sexual activity either. At Inti Eco Lodge, abstinence is maintained during the 15-day post-diet period, for both sexual intercourse and masturbation. This period is a continuation of the work undertaken with the master plant.

This instruction must be understood within the context of the traditional protocol to which it belongs, rather than transformed into a universal rule applicable to anyone who has consumed ayahuasca.

This is an essential distinction.

A one-off ayahuasca ceremony and a traditional master plant dieta guided by a curandero do not necessarily correspond to the same protocol.

Why avoid immediately following plants with ceremonies?

Another mistake can be to consider each new experience as the necessary continuation of the previous one.

Was a retreat strong?

The temptation may be to quickly look for another ceremony, another plant, a new dieta, or a new practice.

However, more experiences do not necessarily mean more integration.

In Inti's protocol, during 1 month after the closing of the diet, participants do not begin, without prior agreement, a new master plant, a new dieta, ayahuasca, other plant-based psychoactive preparations, or medicinal plants.

This period is based on a simple idea:

leave room for what has just been experienced before introducing something new.

Medicine and health: post-dieting never replaces necessary care

This point requires a very clear distinction.

A post-diet should never lead someone to refuse medical treatment or urgent care on their own initiative.

At Inti, dietary supplements are suspended during the main post-diet period, but necessary medical treatment must not be refused without the advice of the healthcare professional involved. Likewise, a medical or dental emergency must be handled.

Health remains a priority.

This distinction is fundamental when speaking publicly about traditional Amazonian medicine.

Watch out for big decisions right after a retreat

A retreat can temporarily or permanently alter the perception of certain situations.

A relationship can look different.

A job that seemed acceptable before departure can suddenly be called into question.

A change of living environment may seem obvious.

This is worth listening to.

But not necessarily executed immediately.

When the situation does not require an urgent decision, letting time pass makes it possible to distinguish lasting understanding from a reaction tied to the intensity or proximity of the experience.

You might even ask yourself this question:

Will this decision still seem as right to me after I have been back in my daily routine for several weeks?

This is not about questioning what you understood.

It is a matter of giving him enough time to show his strength.

What happens if the post-diet is not followed?

A dietary mistake or the occasional omission of a restriction is no reason to panic.

It is also not useful to invent compensation yourself or to arbitrarily prolong the restrictions.

In the Inti Eco Lodge protocol, when a rule is accidentally broken, or when there is doubt concerning a substance, medication, or specific situation, the general recommendation is to seek advice by contacting the center.

The post-diet period should not become a source of obsession or fear.

She asks for attention, not anxiety.

What to do if the return becomes difficult?

Not all post-retirement experiences are comfortable.

Strong emotions, memories, dreams, or questions may continue to appear.

This does not automatically mean that a problem exists.

But the idea that any difficulty should necessarily be considered a «healing,» a «purge,» or a spiritual step to be gone through alone is problematic.

When a person experiences significant or persistent psychological distress, unusual confusion, concerning physical symptoms, or any other situation requiring care, they must be able to seek appropriate help.

Traditional support and integration have their place.

They do not replace medical or psychological care when it is necessary.

At Inti Eco Lodge, the support continues even after the return. At the end of the 15-day post-diet period, a phone call is scheduled to take stock of this period in general: the return to daily life, adherence to restrictions, emotions or feelings that may have emerged, and any notable events experienced since the end of the retreat. This conversation also allows everyone to ask questions, look back on certain moments of their post-diet or retreat, and share what continues to evolve since their departure.
